Hey guys! You may or may not be aware that there has been a posting strike scheduled for this Friday. This strike is in light of the recent asshattery of Livejournal/SUP, in which, along with continued deception of their userbase, there was a targeted removal of certain popular interests such as 'fanfiction', 'slash', and 'bisexuality'.
Obviously, the mods here at
What this means for you:
We will not be approving any posts for twenty-four hours starting at 12:00am GMT on Friday, March 21. I apologize in advance for any inconveniences this will cause you. I hope that you can understand (if not agree) with our reasons. Rest assured that, after that time, we'll go right back to your regularly scheduled boy-sex.
I'd like to urge all of you to participate in the strike as well. (After all, it's only a day, and, who knows, maybe you can use the time away from posting and reading to get some sweet fics written! \o/) And whether or not this has any real, detrimental affect on SUP, I believe it's all about principle. It's important to let them know that we don't support these kind of decisions. And if we don't stand up for ourselves, who will?
THAT BEING SAID, I also believe that this is a personal choice, and there'll be no judgments from anyone here based on your decision. You do you, boo! ♥
More info on the stike, written much more concisely by someone who wasn't me.
For those of you who don't already know, there has been a strike scheduled for Friday, March 21st, 2008, during which we hope to have many members of LiveJournal provide LJ with absolutely no content for twenty-four hours. This means no posting and no commenting. If you post elsewhere and have it set up to be posted through a feed on LiveJournal, don't do it. Stay away from LiveJournal for twenty-four hours. That can't be too hard, can it? I know some of you are probably quite active on LiveJournal and will find it hard to stay away for an entire day, just as I will, but this is something that needs to be done, to show the people running LiveJournal that we're watching the changes they are making, that we're paying attention, that we're discontent, and that we want to be heard and taken in to consideration. We are not simply users who can be tossed to the side and ignored. We are the people who make up LiveJournal. Without us, without the content we create, without our words, our voices, our creativity, our participation, there would be no LiveJournal. This is a fact, and it needs to be realized and understood and then taken in to consideration when making decisions regarding the way that LiveJournal is run. The strike is only a few days away, so there isn't all too much time to prepare. While this is unfortunate, it isn't enough to keep this strike from taking place. It will take place, the second it is meant to, and it would be best to have as many people take part as possible. Please, spread the word. Spread it fast. There are only a few days to organize this. If you find that you care about LiveJournal or care about the people you interact with on LiveJournal or simply want it to remain a place where you can entertain yourself without constant censorship and money-hungry practices being thrown in without the consideration of those who use the service, act now. If you don't wish to spread the word, that is fine, but please: refrain from using LiveJournal on Friday, March 21st. Do something else for a change. It's for a good cause. (:
For background on this strike and why it is being held, please read the following posts:

What's this about?
* It's about free and ad-free LiveJournal accounts being abolished for new members, ignoring the advice from the newly-formed Advisory Board.
* It's about LJ staff trying to sneak this decision in under the radar, and when people found out, telling the users it was done 'to make the signup process less confusing'.
* It's about LJ staff failing to apologize for trying to hide the facts from view and for lying about the actual reasons for their actions.
* And finally, it's about the latest decision to hide certain user interests from the list of Most Popular Interests, some of them being fanfiction, bisexuality, sex and depression. This decision was not announced or explained in any way. Users found out for themselves.

I don't know, I'm still cautiously optimistic though, and very hesitant to give up on a place that's been my home for so long. I don't think the situation is too irreconcilable just yet. *hopes*

seeing as my flist will be dead. All the bs that LJ is pulling seems like a slap in the face. I just broke down and bought a permanent account this past summer, and then this started happening.

What you should do, is get as many people as possible to start posting as many comments and posts as they can on the given day all at once. This will do two things; it will get the point across that we want to be able to post what we want when we want, and it will also overload lj, causing the site to go down because of too much activity. The livejournal workers can't ignore their website crashing because it affects their business.
This way, you'd be sure to get your point across.

Plus, I'm not even sure their servers would crash if everyone posted together.

lol I kind of passed out for a while on my laptop last night and I saw you and Amanda were talking about this :)

The problem with the method you're suggesting is that:
1) The amount of increased posting it would take to do that would actual result in increased ad revenue for them.
and 2) It's hard to say if it would even by possible to overload their server that way.
And how much would that suck if all we succeeded in doing was massively increasing their revenue for a day?

I'm proud that you're joining the strike! It's for a good cause, for sure.
I hope you don't mind if I use the icon to get the strike news out there?
Thanks! :D

But I do agree with "rydeninthesky"
We could just crash lj.
MWAH HA HAAA.
:]

They're organizing this way too late. They'll never get enough people to make an impact now. So the only way to get lj's attention with so few people is to crash it.

And really, while yes, SUP is being really douchey lately, they kind of own the company. They are subject to do what they want, and how they want. It's a private corporation. It's not your local co-op. You really have no say in anything they do, or will do. Sure, make your opinion known, do a no content day (that ultimately won't work), whatever... but when it really comes down to it, no matter how asshatery this all becomes, most of you will stay on Livejournal because your community is worth the douchery. SUP knows this. SUP anticipates your no content, faux "I'm doing something positive!" actions. SUP doesn't care. SUP will continue to be douchey. Because SUP is a corporation that needs to make money, and makes money by ads. (pull your journal, stop going to livejournal and maybe you'll see something happen).
Also, if you wish to make your opinion known write letters, call, spam the in boxes - not just
If someone is interested in doing a mass email, mass letter, mass call thing... do it. They're really easy to organize, and do and they might actually accomplish something besides warm fuzzy feelings.
OK, I'm done ranting.

What I don't understand is why the hell you would implement that strategy on the same day as the strike is already planned. If you don't agree with our strategy, then that's fine, but how about having a little respect for the fellow members of your community instead of trying to sabotage their attempts to do something positive. That just seems horribly immature and antagonistic to me.
If you were to do it on any other day, I would be right there with you, because really, you're right, I do love this community that we've created, and I'll do anything that has even the slightest potential of making a difference. I'm aware that SUP is a corperation and is able make (within legal limits, which, in California, it's questionable if this was) choices on how to run their corporation. But common business sense says that the proprietor has certain duties to their customer.
You may well be right that little-to-nothing will change from this, but it was organized by someone else, and I, personally, feel it would be unconscionable for me not to support any movement that was started for the purpose of fighting discrimination and censorship on livejournal.
I'm sorry that you don't feel the same way, but that's your choice. I just wish that you didn't feel the need to sabotage the efforts of others who are only working to that end.

LJ seriously needs to get their shit together, or I will leave.
As much as saying that saddens me, it is something that has to be done. Seriously.
